Subtitle Edit For Ubuntu - Troubleshoting, Tips And Tricks

I begin to grow old and start crazy :)

I have installed that very nice and easy to handle Ubuntu (I've started the 11.10 version installation but at the end, on my computer is now 12.04 version or something).
Anyway, I worked 3 days to understand what this Ubuntu is doing, and more likely, what is NOT doing and then, I decided to install SE.
Well - this 12.04 version is a new installed, but before that I had another Ubuntu installation (11.10), and at that time I was happy :), because SE somehow worked.

But right now, despite mono installation, despite all other things that I thought that will be necessary to have a SE who will work smooth and nice, I get this message:

It should have been installed in the `/usr/lib/mono/2.0/mscorlib.dll' directory.

then:

:~/SE324$ mono SubtitleEdit.exe
Missing method EnableVisualStyles in assembly /home/sherifcarter/SE324/SubtitleEdit.exe, type System.Windows.Forms.Application

Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies.
File name: 'System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'
[ERROR] FATAL UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies.
File name: 'System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'

About mono/2.0 , that issue is solved, first I had 4.0 version, now I have both 4.0 and 2.0 versions (I'm the best :D ).
But I don't know what to do with all that that is after first warning! :)
So, consider this post just like a MAYDAY-MAYDAY :), because I really want to test SE under Ubuntu.
Any help to tweak somehow some Ubuntu's settings or who-knows-what-I-wasn't-doing will be very appreciated.

Hi Doc,

I think you also need "Mono-winforms version 2.0" so do install it, if not included in your mono version
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=851578

You'll also need MPlayer (or MPlayer 2 for improved/preciser seeking)

Thanks for the tips. :)

I have installed mono-winforms and Mplayer 2.0.
Then, I want to open a .srt file and its video file, ofcourse.
Well, SE has loaded that .srt file, but when I tried to start playing video file, I was surprised looking how my Ubuntu just log me off !
I have an ATI Radeon HD 4600 series, and I have installed Ubuntu's driver for this video card.

What shall I do next?
Smash my computer? :)
Format Ubuntu HDD partition? :)

Hi doc!

Nice you got it almost working... I don't remember implementing loggig off when opening a video though ;)
You could try uninstalling mplayer2 and install mplayer instead... I'm still mostly a windows guy. Perhaps some ubuntu power users can help?

You could also search the Ancients' database :)

I'd read something last evening, I've got some ideas what to try next.
Anyway, as you said, any help from Ubuntu users will be very appreciated :)

Ok, I make some progress :D.
As I suspected (and as what I was afraid off and being not so willing to use Ubuntu), the issue was because video card driver. Now it's solved and more of that :) , when I start SE and play a video file, Ubuntu wasn't log me off. What a good guy is this Ubuntu! :D
BUT, (you thought it is so easy? :) ), the video is playing but no line from the subtitle is showing.
Also, I take a look at SE - Settings - Video Player and on Video engine field I had no radio button to check on activated, everything is "grey" here.

Update.
This issue occure when I open an .mp4 video file

With .avi file (but is already a synced file), the current line it is shown in player field but not where I'm expecting for.
PLUS,
If i select a line from current subtitle, that line it is visible where it is supposed to be visible, but when I press "play buton" that line (or any other) aren't visible anymore.

Well, somehow seems we are starting a new session of how-to-do-that and why-is-not-working! :D
I guess we should move to a very new SE for Ubuntu section in this forum :D

I paid some more attention to the terminal window and I noticed these messages after I close SE.
That mpg123 error I don't know why it is, I've just checked and I have instaled that package.
Also, I don't know what it is about "libvdpau_nvidia.so", because I have Ati Radeon video card.

Well, because I had some extra time, because some morons are trying to control what we are doing when we surf the Web :) (in a legal way ofcourse, not that how are they doing right now :) ), because Mr. Bill wants to keep control on his products (and also, to make us paying for almost everything), because some other morons are so "worried" about the author's rights and want to control us, some time ago (not so long), I decided to try Ubuntu as an alternative to what Mr.Bill was offering me.

So, just like a newbie that I am, I've made all things that I'd read about to be necessary to have a very nice Ubuntu installation on my computer.
Ofcourse, beeing a newbie means that I have to take step-by-step to have a decent Ubuntu installation (and that involved till now a 3 times HDD format and 4 fresh Ubuntu instalations :) ).
Anyway, somehow I became smarter that I thought :) , so I start to look for some applications, that I common use under Mr.Bill's product, to have them under my fresh Ubuntu.

What was a pleasure, suddenly became a tragedy.

First, I had some troubles with my video card, but I was expecting that.
I had to call a friend, ofcourse, and talk with it what it was about :) . As a very good friend as it is, Google search pointed me to some treads from its marvelous knowledge base and in that way I've managed to have a clean video card's drivers installation.

Then I tried to see how Subtitle Edit works under Ubuntu, becase there is a Linux release, and that one must be checked, right?

Another headache!
First I was unable to play a video file, when I tried to sync something.
Somehow I solved that issue (I've made an update to my video card driver, also I've made an update to MPlayer).

I start to think if there aren't something missing, and by "something" I mean some codecs, audio and / or video.
As a smart guy as I'm, I have installed what is called "Synaptic Package Manager", an application that allow me to install / uninstall some many things (as long as I know what to do - and that is a real BIG problem :) ). In this way, I look for "codecs" and I've install what I thought were missing to my lovely Ubuntu and so on.
Despite all of these, I cant use SE, and that is a truly problem.
Today, after some upgrades and some other small tweeaks, I tried one more time to see what is happening when I try to sync something.
There are some things that I wrote in the posts frome above.
But today I tried the wave form feature and I've got a v e r y - l o n g list with some "things".
If someone is able to translate that for me, will be very appreciated! :)

Oh, because I was very "touched" when I discovered what happen behind such a small thing like trying SE's wave form feature :) , I forgot to mention: when I press "play", the cursor line jump to the end of wave form, no matter where or what is playing in that moment.

Some wise guy said some time ago "Third time is a lucky one!".
Well, that's so true! :)

When I saw that I cannot make SE to work, I start to think on what I did wrong. And I realize that I tried to do things in Ubuntu just like I was use Windows. And not just a Windows, but Windows 7, an OS that is developed to be anti-stupid user (that is what I think about Win7).
Anyway, because such a long Windows-use time, I realize that I lost something important - the thinking way.
With Windows everything cames "as it is", you don't have to worry about what you need, or what you want to do, or any stuff like these.
On the other hand, Ubuntu needs to think what you want from it.

So, I started a format procedure, then I installed (third time) - this new for me - Ubuntu.
Here I make a small comment: you can install Ubuntu in some different ways.
From a CD, from an USB, from a virtual disk and so on.
I've made previous installation from a virtual disk, and I had to press "continue" button from an error message box several times.

Now, using Windows, I've extracted all contend from downloaded Ubuntu image (with 7zip, it's so easy) to Ubuntu partition, in a folder named "Kitt" (an example).
From there, I used wubi.exe and I've proceed to installation. (you will be asked on wich partition to install, name of partition, language, user's name and password, common stuff).
Well, till there, nothing so hard to do, will go on to tweaks.

What we will have to do to be sure that Subtitle Edit will work under Ubuntu (well, is what I was doing)

First of all, I opened Ubuntu Software Center, and on search fild I typed Synoptic Package Manager. Then I installed, ofcourse.
After that, I had to install video card drivers, in my case an ATI Radeon.

For that I did in this way:

Using web browser, I checked vendors official page and I've downloaded the appropiate package for my video card and ofcourse, for Ubuntu (the package will be downloaded into Download folder).

Using Ctrl+Alt+T, I opened the terminal window.
There I wrote:

cd Download
sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12-2-x86.x86_64.run

(in my case)

After installation, you'll have to reboot.

The next step it was to install mplayer (a player used by Ubuntu and SE to play video files)
For that do following:
Open the terminal window

sudo apt-get update

When this command was executed (you'll know, the command promp is displayed again) do that one:

sudo apt-get install mplayer

Now starts the tricky things.
After mplayer's installation, you'll have to do this, using terminal window, ofcourse:

sudo -E wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list [http]://[www].medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update

ATTENTION: REMOVE the brackets from http and www, it was the only solution that I found to write the whole command!!!

then

sudo apt-get install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu

All this command adds Medibuntu’s repository to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu’s GPG key to your keyring, which is needed to authenticate the Medibuntu packages, and also adds support for WMV, RealMedia and other formats has been bundled into the w32codecs package.
This package is not available from the Ubuntu repositories due to licensing and legal restrictions.
To play encrypted DVDs, the libdvdcss2 package is essential.

IMPORTANT

For i386 Users (users that have installed Ubuntu 32 Bites version) install Codecs using the following command

sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2

For amd64 Users (Ubuntu 64 Bites version) install Codecs using the following command

sudo apt-get install w64codecs libdvdcss2

Everything it's clear?

Then will procceed to the next step: VLC installation
VLC is a good player, but more of that, it have some codecs, required to play some video formats.
To install it, do this:
Open terminal window, then type (one at the time!):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc

then

sudo apt-get update

and finally

sudo apt-get install vlc

Wow, a long post.
Till now.

Next thing to do. CODECS! But not just codecs, the ffmpeg codecs.
For that, open previously installed Synaptic Package Manager (from the Dash Home icon, and type it into the search field. You can add it to the Launcher taskbar by right-clicking to the icon and choosing "Lock to the Launcher" option), then type into the search field "ffmpeg".
A new page with some applications will open.
From there, choose and install (that it's what I've made, one by one) "Multimedia player, server, encoder and transcoder (transitional package)", "GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin", and "WinFF".

After that, using same Synaptic Package Manager, type "mono-complete" and install it.

Also, type "libqtgui4" and install it.

Now, what remains?

Oh, to go to nikse.dk page, download latest version of SE (that it's 3.2.5., at the time when I'm writting this guide), version that is named SE325.zip, and extract it to SE325 new created folder (for example).
Then open the terminal window (you know, Ctrl+Alt+T), then type:

cd SE325 (or how you named it)

then

mono SubtitleEdit.exe

Let's have a recap:
1. Install video card driver
2. Install mplayer and VLC
3. Install codecs
4. Install mono aplication
5. Install SE
6. Using SE :)

OK, there are some tweaks to do on mplayer.conf file, but that one will be next.

thanks for this great step by step program but i still need some advice.

Since two days now i am trying to get subtitle editor running on kubuntu linux.
before on windows i had no problems at all.
it starts up via mono and i can insert the srt file. no problem.
as soon as i insert a video file it crashes and disappears.
i had it so far the other day that it stayed and only showed an error when i wanted to generate the wave forms.
But now i cant even open a video in there.
i have noiced that i cant set the option for video player .
has anyone had same issues and/or does anyone have a solution?

thanks in advance

If I'm not making any mistakes (because right now I'm under Windows :D ), you can edit mplayer.conf file (you need the be logged as root - sudo su).
Anyway, take a look HERE but keep in mind that I'm more that a newbie as Ubuntu user :) .
Also, I'm not sure, but there are no differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu?

wow, thanks for the quick response doc!

i am newbie as well and only want to get the editor working:)
i read the link you gave but really am not much smarter now.

do you think it is the mplayer that lets the editor crash?
the thing is that i am not able to chose any player .
under settings -video player -video engine i am not able to chose anything.

do i need to or have to link the editor somehow to a player before being able to chose one under settings?
if so how ?

exuse my beginner questions but it would be simply great to have it working in linux, never had any issues in windows though.

again thanks a lot for the help!

Well, you cannot set any other player for SE under Ubuntu but only mplayer ! :)
I belive that it is in this way because the lack of any decent other options of Ubuntu's applications.
Therefore, the mplayer.conf file must be edited (or just made some minor changes, I wanted at the time when I posted that quide to said something about that, but I forgot :) ).
Anyway, if you want to edit that file you need to do (more or less, I "quote" :) from memory :) ) that:

Open a terminal window Ctrl+Alt+T
Type sudo su (at least, that is working for my Ubuntu :) )
You will be asked for password (same password as your user name)
Now you'll have full rights (I don't understand WHY user account is labeled as having admin rights but in fact is not)
Type cd etc/mplayer
Type gedit config
There are lots of lines.
Seek for Video section and write vo=X11, xv, save and close, log off as root and try run SE.

or,
backup your mplayer.config and then (using the steps from above) copy/paste what it is bellow (I hope I not lost you now! :D ).

#======
# Video
#======

# Set video driver.
vo=X11, xv

# Use double-buffering. (Recommended for xv with SUB/OSD usage)

Did you find out how to replace mplayer with mplayer2? (mplayer2 has precise seeking, so it would be much better)

Yes I did! :)

First, you have to remove previous installed mplayer (from Ubuntu Software Center).
Then, using same application, or using terminal window (need a little Google work :) ), you can install mplayer2.
Then, when you'll use the SE, you'll have the maximum surprise to see SE looking and working (almost) like under Windows.

Why "almost" ?
Because when you tick Select current line while playing check box, the selected line is moving, but when it reach the end of the window, the next line is selected but is not shown!

doc.

PS.Maybe you should think to make a SE installer for Ubuntu, adding in one package all that I said in my previouse posts (codecs, mono, mplayer2, etc).

Hi, is this section is still alive ? lol

Hello there, I have played with Ubuntu Based Linux with subtitle edit for a couple of weeks

yes, video card seems still very challnging part.  but I just found the full capablity.

I used Zorin OS 6.2 offering Windows look and feel and
include WINE programme, which help to run WIndows application under
Linux.

Essentially we need to create Windows enviroument for Subtitle Edit

Under WINE What i have installed :

Mono-2.10.9  ( Windows version of Mono)

Subtitle Edit 3.34

VLC player 2.06 (Windows version )

Some Notes:

* Wine + MS own .Net 2.0 does not work with Subtitle Edit (Menu, icon does not display) Use WINE + MONO

* Subtitle Edit 3.33 did not generate WAVE file with VLC player.. but 3.34 does ! (I don't know why)

* MPLAYER never recognises by Subtitle Edit

*Ubuntu has a lot of problems with video drivers, you need to sort out this first. (ATI would be awful, Nvidia may be OK, Intel
is Fine, In my case, old ATI never works, Nvidia works without Dual Monitor with still some bugs. Intel base is so easy

* Drag and Drop does not work, if easy to fix or patch, please  fix this issue, (You need to make the same file name of subtitle  file (srt etc) and Video file (mp4 etc) to load up together with   Subtitle Edit

* Don't separate Video screen, never come back (not working)

Hope people all over the world share and exchage  more information with Linux + Subtitle Edit with Open Licence Enviroument !!

I totally agree about the last line!

As a side note, I'm using nvidia binary Xorg driver (open source, nvidia-313) without any problems (on a nvidia GT525M card). Yes, ATI is awful and it should be avoided if anyone is looking to switch from Windows.

Changing the world. One subtitle at a time.

Well, I hope to be alive :)

At the time when I started this post I was just just curious about how SE is working under Linux, so I have installed on my PC the very first Linux distribution that I get - I mean Ubuntu whatever Quetzacoatl, Popocatepetl or something like that.
Of course, I spent a lot of time trying to understand how this OS is made, how it works and more of that, how I can made it more friendly and easy to use for my purpose.
I didn't made as I wanted, and I quit using Linux, part because of lack of drivers, part because of too many technical things, part because 3 of my HDDs have decided to broke, one by one :D

Then I have been forced to start using Linux again, because the company I'm working for, like every respectably company has decided to migrate from Windows to Linux :)
And a lot of problems has came for me, because - guess what! :) - lack of drivers! :)

Anyway, somehow I had to read a lot about Linux and how-to-do some things and I discovered some nice Linux distributions like Xfce or, a most-like-Windows in my opinion, Linux Mint (yeah, I finally discovered America by myself :) ) .

Right now I'm searching for some HDDs :D because I want to have Windows on one of them, and some Linux distribution on the other.
I hope that will happen very soon, then I'll came back with more updates about Subtitle Edit For Ubuntu - Troubleshooting, Tips And Tricks. :)

Till then, any other experience regarding Linux will be very appreciated. :)
