For fresh broadcast show, do people rip a subtitle or do people listen and type?

Title.Do people rip from a readymade somehow subtitle or do people listen?

Some subtitles comes up so fast If they are produced by people listening then it must be a cooperation I think. Like people getting assigned 5 minute chunks.

Most of the subtitles are coming from subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH subtitles) embedded with the show. These need to be verbatim (every spoken word on screen) and are usually as long as possible on screen as deaf and hard of hearing have more difficulty to read and would be disrespectful to leave words out. The subtitle - like you can find on Addic7ed - are reworked, checked and corrected for translation SDH subtitles.

A subtitle is not a translation. A subtitle needs like 3 frames space between the line, there are rules as per minimum / maximum duration time and also the CPS (Characters Per Second) needs under a certain value as a high value gives the people - who watching  the show - simply not giving time enough to read the lines. These rules varies per country, I guess. From a 1000 lines verbatim translation SDH subtitle you can loose easily half the lines for a proper subtitle.

An experienced translator subtitler needs around 10-12 hours to make an close to subtitle from a SDH subtitle based on a 45 minutes show from average difficulty. They need to be good at spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately, translate the dialogue into the required language sensitively and understand “slang”, be adept in using the subtitling software etc.

Making a subtitle from scratch is more time consuming as you have to “spot” the time codes. This will add least a couple of hours based on a 45 minutes show as it often require fine-tuning afterwards.
